Fogo Island, Newfoundland July 6, 2017

Root Cellar
From Twillingate, we returned south and stopped in a port town called Little Harbor.  More icebergs than houses!!!

We explored the little town, with its root cellars that they used to use to keep food from freezing in winter and cool in summer.  They were usually dug into the north side of a hill.

We continued backtracking and came to this sign - turns out, Dildo Run Provincial Park (posted photo yesterday) is in this town.....no, really!

Dandelions are everywhere.

We then headed northeast to catch the one-hour ferry to Fogo Island - about 20 miles long and 12 miles wide.  These vehicle ferries are made to drive on from one end and drive off the other.  This ferry had a hiccup and the one gate didn't work.  I was driving and it turned out, we had to BACK OFF the ferry!  The ship crew directed me and I managed to get the RV off the ferry without doing a damage to the ship or go swimming.

We drove to the far northeast corner of the island to a to a national historic district Irish town called Tilting.

Lots of shakes (sheds with a dock for use by fishermen) and small, old homes.

Many of the homes were built to be moved.  Folks often did not own the land, but built a house using techniques that would allow it to be moved when necessary by either rolled logs and skids or sleighs.  Guess they were sort of the first house trailers - but some of these were two stories tall.

We then explored one of the larger towns residential and commercial towns on the island called Joe Batt's Arm, then on to the town of Fogo to our Lions Club campground, OCEANFRONT!  Fabulous spot overlooking a cove with 6-7 icebergs.

Lots and lots of icebergs today

Very breezy, but warm and we enjoyed sitting out for cocktail hour watching the bergs.  They change depending on the light and the wind.  We spent a while talking with the couple from British Columbia camped next to us and yesterday, they actually saw one split off and turn over with a huge crash.

After dinner, we sat in the RV and watched the sunset and icebergs until dark at 9:30.  What a great day.
