Northwestern PEI June 6-7

Woke to a beautiful sunny, but cold morning.  We drove north to the very northwestern tip of Prince Edward Island to visit the Wind Energy Interpretive Center.  They had a wonderful museum that talked about energy in general and wind power, in particular.  They did an excellent job and it answered all the questions we had asked over the years as we would drive by these huge wind turbines.  One turbine can provide enough energy for 4,000 homes.  The blades are razor sharp and the turbine is computer controlled, identifying the wind direction and turning the unit into the wind and shutting it down completely when it is too windy.  Five percent of PEI is currently powered by wind.

We made a quick stop at a 9-hole golf course called St. Felix (primarily in honor of SC friend, Felix), but it was pretty much a mown field with decent greens and decided to pass as PEI has lots of golf course choices.

We returned southeast along the opposite shore and into the center of the peninsula to visit the National Canadian Potato Museum.  PEI is known for its red sandy soil that is perfect for growing potatoes.  If we were farmers, especially potato farmers, this museum would have been heaven, but old farm equipment just isn't our "thing." We did learn that potatoes have a huge number of diseases and pests and that there are more varieties of potatoes than varieties of red wine.

We have been noticing that many homes in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have pretty gardens and the buildings are exceptionally small, but well-kept.

We had been trying to play a golf course in the northwestern area, but there are no local campgrounds.  The weather is beautiful today, high around 70 and I want to enjoy happy hour outside with a view of the ocean.  So, we moved on and got a great campsite on the coast and found a golfcourse to play around Cavendish - near Anne of Green Gables vicinity. A wonderful happy hour in the salt air and sunshine.

Later, as we watched another gorgeous sunset, we toasted our good friend, Jim, who passed today from ALS and is now at peace.  He was a wonderful man whose smile lit up the room and was always cheerful and giving.  Our deepest condolences to Cynthy and the rest of his family.  We will miss him.
