Acadia Shores
The western part of the Evangeline Trail was originally settled by the French who built dykes in the marshes to reclaim land for farming. Although the French were "removed" by the British in the early 1700's and the land resettled by New England Tories after the Revolutionary War, some of the French returned and many of the people in this area of Nova Scotia speak French. The French built beautiful churches, including this massive granite church that seats over 1,000 people and the largest all-wooden church in North America. The wooden church was built only with wood - wooden pegs instead of nails, for instance. It is incredibly beautiful inside and a teenaged girl dress in traditional Acadian costume gave us a tour.
