Central Coastal California

Miles and miles of vineyards
We drove west from Solvang through the Sierra Madres, with lots of vineyards, miles of various crops (berries and cool weather crops) and cows grazing on the green hillsides.  From Lompoc, home of Vandenberg Airbase, we drove a narrow, twisting road up and down mountains 14 miles out to the Jalama Beach on the coast.  We finally made it to the Pacific Ocean!
The Pacific Ocean and Jalama Beach Campground

Isolated, with no Verizon cell service, we had no phone or internet.  But boy, did we have gorgeous ocean views from our campsite.  Too windy and cool for this weather wimp to sit outside, we enjoyed our happy our watching the sunset from inside the RV, jumping out every few minutes to take yet another sunset photo.

Stayed windy all night, but was much calmer the next morning, so I walked the beach strewn with multicolored rocks, sharing it with the shore birds.

Fun watching the surfers (in wetsuits)

Coot
We headed back into Lompoc and then north on Route 1 to Pismo Beach.  This is the only beach in California that can be accessed with vehicles, but it looked like much too soft sand for our heavy RV.  So, we stayed at a campground 1/2 mile from the beach on a small arroyo - sort of a meandering fresh water stream and small lake.  Lots of birds and I did a short walk around the water.

In addition to the ducks, the trees were alive with a murder of crows, making a huge racket for a couple of hours - glad we weren't parked under those trees or Li'l Guy would have needed another scrubbing.
Most of the birds were in trees with foliage and hard to see.  There were many hundreds of birds.
